About The Work
I take vintage images from magazines, remove them from their original context and place them in illogical situations or weird associations. I enjoy the mystery, tension and humor that develop within the new narrative.
The human figure appears in many of the works and is often the stirring element for a piece. I am drawn to forms that show action or tension. Initially the original image may be from an advertisement. In Look Right Through, one of the women with suitcases is about to embark on a vacation in the original ad. She is happy and all smiles. I then cut off the upper body. The figure now has an unsettled feel. Next by adding more visual ‘vocabulary’ to the composition, I transform a benign ad to a vision of the human condition.
Often, I juxtapose the mechanical with the human. Recently, my subjects consist of the figure in ill relationship with their man-made environment. Propagate and Carnivorous Yen touches on our culture’s disconnectedness to the growing and harvesting of food.
The collage process derives from my need to organize and categorize. Much time is spent placing images together. Some are kept for years until they find purpose. It is similar to building a jigsaw puzzle. I place my trust in my subscious to figure the outcome. Images are cut out, spread across multiple tables, moved around and laid next to each other, until there is a fit. |
